How to DM on Reddit without getting reported

Five things that decide whether a Reddit DM gets a reply or a report.

  • Where the button is. Open the person's profile and use Chat, or Start Chat, near the top. Chat is Reddit's DM. The older Send a Message option still exists on some profiles and lands in the same place for them.
  • Who you can reach. Anyone whose chat requests are on. New and low-karma accounts hit a daily cap and have their first messages filtered harder, so warm the account up before you message anyone.
  • Your first message is a request. It sits in their requests tab until they accept, and Reddit shows them a Report button next to Accept. Spam reports on a young account get it restricted fast.
  • Say why you are writing. Name the post or comment of theirs that made you reach out. A DM that could have been sent to anyone reads as a campaign and gets reported as one.
  • Ask for a reply, not a signup. Give something useful, ask one question they would want to answer, and leave the link out of the first message. The bigger ask comes after they respond.
