// subreddit self-promotion rules

Which subreddits allow self-promotion?

We read the rules of 1,117 subreddits and sorted each into one of six policies, with the rule quoted. 177 allow self-promotion when it is relevant or within a limit, 47 allow it only in a promo thread, and 425 ban it outright.

The six self-promotion policies

"No self-promotion" is several different rules wearing the same words. Some subreddits ban links but let you name a product, some allow it only in a weekly thread, some gate it behind karma or the 10% rule. Here is what each verdict below means and what to do about it.

  • No promoting your own product, business, content or links, anywhere in the subreddit. No exception thread.

What to do: Answer the question without naming your product. If the poster asked for tools, send one helpful DM instead.

  • Promo thread only47 subreddits

Banned in normal posts and comments, allowed in a pinned weekly or monthly thread, a megathread, or a set day.

What to do: Find the pinned thread at the top of the subreddit and post there. The same post anywhere else gets removed.

  • You can talk about your work, but links to your own site, blog, channel or app are banned or need mod approval.

What to do: Explain the idea in the comment itself and leave the link out. People who want it will ask or search.

  • Within limits143 subreddits

Allowed only within a limit: a karma or account-age minimum, the 10% rule, a ratio cap, or a once-only post with a flair.

What to do: Check the exact limit in the rule before posting, and keep most of your activity there unrelated to what you sell.

  • Allowed if relevant34 subreddits

Allowed when it actually answers the post, usually with your affiliation disclosed. Some subs exist for sharing your work.

What to do: Answer the question first, mention your product only where it fits, and say that it is yours.

  • Not mentioned398 subreddits

The rules say nothing about self-promotion beyond a generic no-spam line. Reddit's sitewide spam rules still apply.

What to do: Treat it as allowed only when relevant and disclosed. Moderators remove anything that reads like an ad.

Why the self-promotion rule is the one that matters

A removal for self-promotion is usually silent. AutoModerator takes the comment down, but it still shows on your own profile, so it is easy to spend weeks posting into a void before noticing.

The expensive part is not the comment or even the account. Once a subreddit adds your domain to its filter, every mention of it is removed, including the ones other people make, and a fresh account does not fix that. Before you post, check the draft with the post removal checker or the comment checker, and read the longer guide to Reddit self-promotion rules.

How the verdicts are made

Where each verdict comes from, and its limits.

  • Read from the subreddit's own rules. Every subreddit's rule list was read from the public Reddit archive on 2026-10-14, in full, not just the rule titles. Older sidebar text was read alongside them, since some subreddits state their promo policy only there.
  • Sorted into one of six policies. A classifier read each rule list and picked the policy it sets for a normal post or comment. A sub that bans promotion everywhere except a weekly or monthly thread is listed as promo thread only, because that thread is where you can post.
  • The rule is quoted next to the verdict. Each row shows the rule title and the sentence the verdict rests on, plus a link to the full rules on Reddit. Loosely worded rules, such as "excessive self-promotion is not allowed", can fairly be read two ways, so check the quote before you rely on the label.
  • Unreadable means unlisted. Subreddits whose rules could not be read or classified are left out rather than guessed. A wrong "allowed" costs someone their account.
  • Rules change quietly. Moderators tighten rules after a wave of spam and rarely announce it. Treat the date above as the date of the check, and read the sidebar before you post.

Frequently asked questions

Which subreddits allow self-promotion?

Of the 1,117 subreddits checked, 34 allow it when it is relevant or disclosed, the largest being r/TwoXChromosomes, r/HighQualityGifs, r/standupshots, r/homestead, r/GifRecipes and r/zelda. Another 143 allow it within a limit such as a karma minimum or the 10% rule (r/gaming, r/Music, r/movies and r/pics), and 47 allow it only in a pinned promo thread (r/listentothis, r/ChatGPT, r/stocks and r/apple).

What does "promo thread only" mean?

The subreddit bans self-promotion in normal posts and comments but runs a designated place for it: a weekly or monthly thread pinned to the top, a megathread, or a set day such as Showoff Saturday. Post there and only there. The same post anywhere else is removed, and repeat posts usually earn a ban.

What is the 10% rule on Reddit?

It is the old Reddit guideline that no more than about one in ten of your posts and comments should promote something you own or work for. Reddit has since loosened its sitewide wording, but many subreddits still write the 10% rule, or a 9:1 ratio, into their own rules. Those are listed here as "within limits".

Does "allowed if relevant" mean I can post a link?

It means the rules do not ban self-promotion outright. Most of those subreddits still expect you to answer the question first, mention your product only where it actually helps, and say that it is yours. A bare link with no answer is removed as spam almost everywhere.

Why is my subreddit not listed?

The list covers the 1,000 largest subreddits plus a few hundred business, marketing and developer subreddits, 1,117 in total after leaving out any whose rules could not be read. For any other subreddit, paste your draft into the post removal checker, which reads that subreddit's live rules.

What should I do when self-promotion is banned?

Answer the question without the product name and be the most useful reply in the thread. If the poster asked for tool recommendations and the subreddit allows DMs, one helpful direct message is the fallback. Never repost the link from a second account: subreddits filter the domain, which removes everyone else who mentions you too.

Rankcow reads the rules before every reply

It finds the buyer-intent threads in your subreddits, checks each one's rules, karma minimum and account-age bar, writes a reply that answers first and mentions your product only where it fits, and sends it on Autopilot within your daily caps. Threads where vendors are not welcome get skipped.
